Governors Island

As part of the Governors Island Climate Solutions Challenge, Sunphade has deployed its dynamic solar control film in New York City. The installation is designed to reduce solar heat gain and glare while preserving daylight and views. Early observations already indicate improved indoor conditions, with measurable reductions in both light intensity and temperature.

The Challenge

Buildings with large glass surfaces often face issues like excessive sunlight, heat gain, and glare, which can negatively impact indoor comfort and visual conditions. On Governors Island in New York City, the objective was to investigate how existing windows could offer improved solar control while maintaining natural daylight and visibility, all without the need for electricity or replacing the glass.

The Solution

As one of the winners of the Governors Island Climate Solutions Challenge, Sunphade installed its patented photochromic solar-control film in Building 108 on Governors Island. This film automatically responds to changing sunlight conditions by darkening in response to stronger sunlight, which helps reduce incoming light and solar heat gain. The technology operates passively, requiring no electricity, sensors, or user intervention.

The Result

Measurements collected between June 2 and August 31, 2026, showed a significant reduction in indoor light levels. Average illuminance was 190 lux behind Sunphade-treated windows, compared with 390 lux behind untreated windows (54% reduction).

The treated area also experienced 90% fewer hours above 1,000 lux, with just 15 hours compared with 145 hours in the untreated area. These results demonstrate Sunphade’s ability to reduce excessive daylight exposure and help create more comfortable indoor lighting conditions while maintaining access to natural light.
